MAJURO, MARSHALL ISLANDS, 7 AUGUST 2013: The Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) has dramatically increased the value of tuna caught in its waters in the last two years according to new data released today. 

In 2010, the amount of tuna caught was valued at USD 1.9 billion, with only USD 60 million of that going to PNA nations. By 2012, the overall value increased to over USD 3 billion, with revenue to PNA countries more than tripling to USD 229 million.

Papua New Guinea through the National Fisheries Authority continues to support the regional management initiatives of the PNA,  most significant has been the  introduction of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for sustainably caught free school skipjack tuna, and with the chain of custody certification recently received delivery can start.

In less than two months the largest tuna industry gathering in the Western and Central Pacific region, the 4th Pacific Tuna Forum, will convene in Honiara, Solomon Islands from 18-19 September, 2013. Response from tuna industry players are encouraging and registrations are pouring in not only from the region but also from the US, Europe and Asia. PNA OFFICE PRESENTS SOLUTION TO TUNA OVERFISHING: STOP FAD FISHING ON HIGH SEAS, LIMIT FISHING ON HIGH SEAS, NO MORE FOREIGN FISHING VESSELS

WEDNESDAY, 28 AUGUST 2013, TOKYO, JAPAN: The PNA Secretariat has presented a fresh proposal to stop overfishing of bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. The proposal also ensures that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) do not bear a disproportionate burden of conservation.

PACIFIC REGION, 2 MAY 2013: The Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) announced the winners of the World Tuna Day Art and Talent Quest today - a major new opportunity to showcase Pacific talent and passion for tuna.

First Prize (USD $3000) was awarded to Chelcia Gomese (Solomon Islands) for her short story “When seagulls soar the seas again” a beautiful fable about a community whose tuna were lost through unsustainable development then returned to their shores.

With World Tuna Day just a few weeks away on May 2, the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) called on the fishing industry, NGOs and governments to mark the day with local and international celebrations.

In 2011, PNA Ministers declared May 2 to be World Tuna Day, a special day for all who are involved in tuna fishing and tuna conservation and management to celebrate the wonders of tuna with communities around the world.

NEWS: Stick by VDS, MSC certification scheme and raising value of US Treaty, say PNA Ministers

KOROR, PALAU, SUNDAY 3 MARCH 2013: Ministers of Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) member countries renewed their commitment to strictly implement the Vessel Day Scheme, as they inked the agreement during the ministerial meeting on Friday.

According to PNA Resolution 01-2013, ministers of Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, and Republic of the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu agreed to a strict implementation of the VDS scheme.
