The PNA Office (PNAO) completed an in-country 4 days (13- 16 Oct) Longline Vessel Day Scheme (LL VDS) Industry Workshop for Kiribati which was attended by representatives from Kiribati's domestic longline fishing companies and VDS officers from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR). Through a series of presentations and practical sessions, participants gained a better understanding of the objectives, operational requirements, and reporting obligations of the LL VDS, as well as the respective roles and responsibilities of industry operators and government agencies, in its implementation.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for PNAO to brief participants on recent LL VDS developments, including updates to relevant PNA legal instruments, reporting procedures, and monitoring and compliance measures.
Particular emphasis was placed on the use of electronic reporting tools and systems designed to improve data quality, strengthen compliance, and support the effective and transparent management of longline fisheries in Kiribati and across PNA waters.
As a key outcome, participants improved their understanding of LL VDS requirements and reporting obligations, while identifying practical measures to strengthen compliance and increase e-Reporting performance. The workshop reinforced the shared commitment of government, industry, and PNAO to work together towards the effective implementation of the LL VDS and the sustainable management of Kiribati's tuna resources.
